Hazrat Umar Farooq Bin Khatab

Golden Words Hazrat Umar Farooq RadiAllahAnho

Gems of Wisdom by Ameer al-Mu'mineen
Sayyiduna 'Umar al-Farooq Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anho
  • To eat less is healthy, to speak less is wisdom, and to sleep less is worship.
  • To speak less is wisdom, to eat less is healthy and to mingle less with the people is safe and serene.
  • The one who steps back will not progress.
  • Nothing is worst that avarice that destroys the mind, not even Alcohol.
  • It is unbecoming of that person who sits with his hands folded and prays to ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala for sustenance. ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala does not rain down gold and silver from the heavens.
  • To earn a suspicious living is worse than begging.
  • The biggest gift after Iman (Faith) is your wives.
  • Attain knowledge before old age settles in.
  • Extravagance is also when a person eats whatever he wishes.
  • Whosoever hides his secret keeps his safety, safeguarded with himself.
  • The person who calls himself learned, indeed he is ignorant, and the one who calls himself from the dwellers of Paradise surely he is from the dwellers of Hell.
  • Tawbatun-NasooHa (Accepted forgiveness) is the name of that forgiveness that is asked for a bad deed committed, in such a manner that he never returns to or commits that bad deed again.
  • The Strength in action is, never to put of what you can do today for tomorrow.
  • It is not becoming of a Muslim to sit down and start praying for sustenance without attempting to earn it, he is well aware that gold and silver does not rain from the skies.
  • If it wasn’t for the claim of knowledge of the unknown then I would say five people are from the dwellers of Paradise:
  1. That family man who is poverty stricken but is patient
  2. That women with whom her husband is happy and accepting.
  3. That woman who forgives he husband’s duty of Mehr (Dowry approved by Muslim law)
  4. That person with whom his parents are Happy
  5. And that person who honestly repents from his sins
  • Once a sheep was slaughtered and Syeduna 'Umar al-Farooq Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anho persistently asked his servant if he had first sent meat to his neighbour who was a Jew. The slave asked why you are asking the same question persistently. He answered that ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala and his Rasūl Sallallaho Alaihi wa Sallam had constantly stressed the importance of neighbors therefore I too am persistent in stressing the same.
  • Three things build love:
  1. To make Salam (greeting)
  2. To make space for a person in a gathering
  3. To address a person in a respectable and good manner
  •  There are four types of Regrets:
  1. Regret that spans over a day e.g. When a person leaves his home without eating.
  2. Regret that spans over a year, just like the negligence shown when cultivating.
  3. Regret that spans over a lifetime, when a man and his wife are unsuited to each other.
  4. Regret that is eternal, which is when your Creator is unhappy with you.
  • There are three types of people:
  1. Successful: he who listens to the advice of people and ponders over it.
  2. Lazy or Lethargic: he who does what he wants without consultation or advice of people.
  3. Corpse: who neither gives nor listens to advice and consolation.
  • Sayyiduna 'Umar Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anho on many an occasion asked this du'a (supplication) to ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala so that certain situations should always remain with him and some things should be removed, the Du'a is: “O ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala! Make me such that I may speak with intellect or reap tolerance with silent. O! ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala do not bestow upon me too many favours, so that I may not be confused by it, not too little that I may forget You. Hence, little yet sufficient in comparison to having plenty thereby becoming indulgent and committing sin.”
  • If ever you see a learned person ('Aalim) leaning towards this World, then know this he is blameworthy for his Religion, because the universal harm is that if a person desires something then he is constantly engrossed in its quest.
  • Faith (Iman) is to regard the Oneness of ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala in ones heart proclaim it with your tongue and to obey the fundamental Islamic Instructions.
  • The relationship of true humility and genuine fear of ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala is with the heart and not by a show of outward actions.
  • Why have you made slaves of those whose mothers had given birth to them free?
  • Judgments or Settlements in any cases should be done quickly, so that the accused, due to a prolonged period of time are not compelled to withdraw their accusation.
  • It is absolutely necessary not to associate with a beast for though he wishes or means well, yet he would still be accused of committing a crime.
  • ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala, shower your Blessings of Mercy on that person who informs me of my faults.
  • When a learned man takes a false step then he ensnares himself in a World of wrongdoings.
  • One day a man was praising Hadrat 'Umar Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anho, he replied by saying why are you destroying me even more with my desires (Nafs).
  • I do not look at anything, except, that I see everything with ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala.
  • If I die in this condition that I have strived to earn an honest living then it is more beloved to me than even dying as a Martyr.
  • Good behavior towards people is equivalent to wisdom, to request politely is half of knowledge, and to ascribe to sound policies is half of one’s livelihood.
  • To educate a material person is like placing a sword in the hands of a robber.
  • Do not have Faith in a person’s compassion and politeness when he cannot keep his anger under control.
  • Do not have Faith in a religious person who is not tested during temptation.
  • He is a friend who brings to your attention your faults and to sing praises of a person in his presence is similar to slaughtering him.
  • Laughing decreases ones age, while politeness, glamour, pomp and show which ease living standards are indications of people who are unaware of death.
  • To show greed and avarice is impoverishing, to be unselfish is enriching and to wish compensation in patience.
  • Good deeds are the fulfillment of one’s rights and to do good deeds is a substitute for bad deeds.
  • To speak less is wisdom, to eat less is healthy, to sleep less is a prayer and there is peace in solitude.
  • Youth before old age and old age before death is a blessing of life.
  • A generous person is the beloved of Almighty ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala even though he is a transgressor. A miser is the enemy of Almighty ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala although he may pray and remember Almighty ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala excessively.
  • To forgive an oppressor is oppression upon the oppressed.
  • When you combine lawful with unlawful gains then the unlawful contaminates the lawful gains though it may be little.
  • A Mu'min does not keep as his friend one who is opposed to Almighty ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala and his Prophet Sallallaho Alaihi wa Sallam even though that person may be his mother or father.
  • The sound of music and that of a mourner are two of the worst sounds.
  • There is tranquility and peace in anonymity and confidentiality.
  • We should leave the other nine portions out for the fear of Haram (unlawful). (i.e. if in ten portions one is Haram a Muslim would leave the other nine portions out meaning anything unlawful would be completely left out).
  • Desire is never achieved without fear, nor manners and etiquette without formality, or happiness without peace or wealth without gifts or poverty without contentment, or dignity without politeness or Jihad (holy war) without diving guidance and assistance.
  • Respite before preoccupation and old age before death is a blessing of life.
  • Honour and dignity in this World is measured by wealth while honour and dignity in the Hereafter is measured by good deeds.
  • Save yourself from the Fires of Hell even if it means by doing a favour with half a date (fruit). If this too is not possible then with sweet words.
  • After Iman (Faith), there is no greater gift than a pious wife.
  • Not to postpone is strength in action.
  • Whosoever shows you your faults, he is your friend. Those that pay you lip service in praise are your executioners.
  • One who guards his secrets is surely safe.
  • The person who constantly discloses my faults to me is dearest to me.
  • Fear that person who you dislike.
  • When Sayyiduna 'Umar Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anho camped on the outskirts of Jerusalem to conquer Bait al-Maqdas, the Christian Crusaders were terrified of his presence and requested a meeting with him before handing over the keys of the city. The Crusaders met him whilst he wore a patched garb. They asked him the reason as to why his name generated such immence awe and fear that captured the hearts of his enemies. He replied; “Your kings taught you to love the World (Duniyah) and its wealth and our Prophet Sallallaho Alaihi wa Sallam taught us to fear ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala and love death.
  • He is an intelligent person who can translate his actions into good.
  • Never put off for tomorrow what you can do today.
  • There is never a chance of pain in the neck if one does not raise his head too high in the air.
  • Do not forget about yourself whilst being concerned for others.
  • To stop sinning is easier than to bear the burden of seeking repentance.
  • Remove your gaze from the splendor of the World. Do not let the love of this World enter your heart. Beware! The love of this World does not perhaps destroy you, just as it had destroyed previous nations.
  • Victory is gained through strategy and trust in ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala, not by wishful thinking.
  • The most intelligent amongst you is he who fears ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala the most.
  • Be sympathetic towards the poor so that they may be able to speak and build courage.
  • Extend a hand of friendship to a foreigner because if his stay is extended then he would leave his valuable possessions to return to his own country and leave that person responsible for his valuables who had been most worthy of his attention
  • Do not taunt and curse anyone for this gives rise to collective evils in a person.
  • One should not judge a person by the number of Salaat (prayer) or Roza (fasting) but by his wisdom and honesty.
  • Prayer is connected to the heart not by mere apparent actions.
  • To educate a seeker of materialism is to place a sword in the hands of a highway robber.
  • Do not trust the character of one who cannot control his temper.
  • To laugh excessively is a sign of no remorse for death.
  • To side with the oppressor is oppression on the oppressed
  • Death is the best teacher.

Farooq e Azam Aur Sarkar Ki Ghulami

Excellence and Virtues of the Second Caliph

All praise is for Allah who ennobled the ability of those who desire to be his servants. I testify that there is no deity except Allah, the King of the distressed and the happy, I testify that our master Muhammad is his beloved Messenger, who establishes the right path, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his family, his companions and the outstanding leaders.

The excellence and virtues of the second caliph of Islam, Sayyiduna Umar al-Farooq, may Allah be pleased with him, are more than can be counted. Here, I am mentioning the most famous ones. I only wish to bless myself by serving him by this remnant to benefit he who does not know much of his virtues by the ignorance before him. This small collection of Traditions will in sha Allah increase and elevate his rank in our hearts and minds and tell us of his exalted status in the court of Almighty Allah and His beloved Messenger SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam.

    1. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both the father and the son) reports the Holy Prophet, may Allah send greetings and salutations on him, as saying:

"I dreamt that I was at a well drawing water with a young camel's bucket, Abu Bakr came and drew one or two buckets, but there was some weakness in his drawing. May Allah forgive him. Then 'Umar ibn al-Khattab came and it turned into a large bucket in his hand. I have not seen a leader among the people work so well as he did until the people watered their camels." [Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of the Virtues of the Companions, Hadith 3479]

When 'Umar ibn al-Khattab asked for permission to enter, they rushed to screen themselves. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, gave him permission and 'Umar entered while the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was laughing. 'Umar said, 'May Allah make you laugh, Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'I am amazed at those women who were with me. When they heard your voice, they rushed to screen themselves.' 'Umar said, 'But you, Messenger of Allah, are more entitled to be feared.' Then he said, 'O enemies of your selves! Do you fear me and not fear the Messenger of Allah?' They said, 'Yes, you are harsher and more severe than the Messenger of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah said, 'O Ibn al-Khattab! By the One in whose hand my soul is, whenever Shaytan finds you taking a path, he only takes a path other than your path.'" [Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of the Virtues of the Companions, Hadith 3480]

"'Umar ibn al-Khattab who had been placed on his bed, and the people gathered around him to make supplication and pray before he was removed. I was among them. I was startled when a man took hold of my shoulders, and it was 'Ali ibn Abi Talib. He asked for mercy for 'Umar and said, 'You have not left behind anyone I would prefer to encounter with the like of your actions. By Allah, I used to think that Allah would put you with your two companions. I reckoned this as I often heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, "I and Abu Bakr and 'Umar went..." and "I and Abu Bakr and 'Umar entered..." and "I and Abu Bakr and 'Umar left."'"[Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of the Virtues of the Companions, Hadith 3482]

Syeda Fatima Tuz Zohra

Introduction of Syeda Fatima Tuz Zohra

Sayyidah Fatimah az-Zahra Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha was the fourth daughter of the Holy Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam and Sayyidah Khadija Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha. "Zahra" (having gleaming and luminous face), "Batool" (aloof from the worldly pleasures) are "Tahira" (chaste and modest) are among her exalted titles.

She was an unusually sensitive child of her age. When she was five, she heard that her father had become the Apostle of Allah SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam. Her mother Sayyidah Khadija Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha explained to her what the responsibilities of a Prophet are. Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha became more closely attached to her father and felt a deep and abiding love for him. She used to accompany him through the narrow streets of Makkatul Mukarrama, visiting the Ka’bah or attending the secret meetings of the early Muslims who had embraced Islam and pledged allegiance to her father.

Once, she accompanied her father to the Masjid al-Haraam. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam began to pray in front of the Ka’bah. A group of Quraysh chiefs gathered around the Holy Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam. Uqbah bin Abi Mu’ayt brought the entrails of a slaughtered animal and threw it on the shoulders of the Beloved Habeeb SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam. Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha, a ten year old girl, went up to her father and removed the filth. Then, in a firm and angry voice she lashed out against Abu Jahl and his colleagues. They could not utter a single word.

After the demise of her mother, Sayyidah Khadija Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha, she felt that she had to give even greater support to her father. She devoted herself to looking after his needs. She was so engrossed in her father’s service that people started calling her “Umm Abiha”, the mother of her father. The Holy Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam had a special love for Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha.

Sayyiduna Miswar bin Makhramah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha reported that the Holy Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam said:

فاطمة بضعة منى ، فمن أغضبها أغضبنى
“My daughter is part of me. He who disturbs her in fact disturbs me and he who offends her offends me.” [Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3767]

The Holy Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam also said:

حسبك من نساء العالمين أربع مريم بنت عمران و آسية امرأة فرعون و خديجة بنت خويلد و فاطمة بنت محمد
“The best women in the entire world are four: The Virgin Mariyam Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha daughter of Imran and Aasiya Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha the wife of Pharaoh and Khadija Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha Mother of the Believers and Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha, daughter of Muhammad SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam.” [Mustadrak al-Hakim, Vol. 4, Page 262, Hadith 4745]

Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha thus acquired a place of love and esteem in the Beloved Nabi’s SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam heart that was only occupied by his wife Sayyidah Khadija Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha.  She was given the title of “Zahra” which means “The Resplendent One”. That was because of her beaming face, which seemed to radiate light.  She was also called “Batool” because of her purity and asceticism. She spent most of her time in the recitation of the Holy Quraan, performing Salaah and doing other acts of Ibadah.

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha said:

أقبلت فاطمة تمشي كأن مشيتها مشي النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، فقال: "مرحباً بابنتي". ثم أجلسها عن يمينه، أو عن شماله
“I have not seen any one of Allah’s SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala creation resemble the Messenger of Allah SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam more in speech, conversation and manner of sitting than Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha. When the Holy Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam saw her approaching, he would welcome her, stand up and kiss her, take her by the hand and sit her down in the place where he was sitting.” [al-Adab al-Mufrad, Page 406, Hadith 421]

Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha learnt from her father the manners and gentle speech. She was kind to the poor. She often gave her food to the needy preferring herself to remain hungry. She had no inclination towards the materialistic world. She had no craving for the ornaments of this world or the luxuries and comforts of life.

Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha was married to Sayyiduna Ali Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha at the beginning of the second year after the Hijra.  She was nineteen-year-old and Sayyiduna Ali Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha was about twenty-one. The Holy Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam himself performed the Nikah. On her marriage, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam is said to have presented Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha and Sayyiduna Ali Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha with a wooden bed intertwined with palm leaves, a velvet coverlet, a leather cushion filled with the leaves of a plant, a sheepskin, a pot, a water-skin and a quern (A primitive hand-operated mill for grinding grain) for grinding grain.

One day Sayyiduna Ali Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha asked her to go to her father and ask for a servant. Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha came to the Holy Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam. The Holy Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam said:

ألا أخبرك ما هو خير لك منه ، تسبحين الله عند منامك ثلاثا وثلاثين ، وتحمدين الله ثلاثا وثلاثين ، وتكبرين الله أربعا وثلاثين
“Shall I not tell you of something better than that which you asked of me? I am telling you the words, which Jibra’eel Alaihis Salam has told me. You should say Subhan-Allah (Glory be to Allah SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala) 33 times, Al-HamduLillah (Praise be to Allah SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala) 33 times and Allahu Akbar (Allah SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala is Great) 34 times.” [Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 5362]

This is called “Tasbeeh-e-Fatimah” and brings blessings upon the person who regularly recites it.

Before proceeding on to his Farewell Pilgrimage in Ramadaan, 10 A.H., the Holy Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam said to Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha:

إن جبريل كان يعارضني القرآن كل سنة مرة وإنه عارضني العام مرتين ولا أراه إلا حضر أجلي
“The Archangel Jibra’eel Alaihis Salam recited the Qur'an to me and I to him once every year, but this year he has recited it with me twice. I cannot but think that my time has come”. [Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3426]

On his return from the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Holy Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam became seriously ill.  He was confined to the apartment of his beloved wife Sayyidah Ayesha Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha. When Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha visited her ailing father, Sayyidah Ayesha Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha would leave father and the daughter together.

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha reported:

“We, the wives of Allah’s Apostle were with him (during his last illness) and none was absent therefrom that Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha, who walked after the style of Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam, came there, and when he saw her he welcomed her saying: ‘You are welcome, my daughter’. He then made her sit on his right side or on his left side. Then he said something secretly to her and she swept bitterly and when he found her (plunged) in grief, he said to her something secretly for the second time and she laughed. I (Ayesha Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha) said to her: ‘Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam has singled you amongst the women of the family for talking to you something secretly and you wept’. When Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam recovered from illness, I said to her: ‘What did he say to you?’ Thereupon, she said: ‘I am not going to disclose the secret of Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam. When the Holy Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam passed away, I said to her: ‘I adjure you by the right that I have upon you that you should narrate to me what Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam said to you.’ She said: ‘Yes, now I can do that. When he (Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam) talked to me secretly for the first time he informed me that Jibra’il Alaihis Salam was in the habit of reciting the Qur'an along with him once every year, but this year it had been twice and so he perceived his death quite near, so fear Allah SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala and be patient (and he told me) that he would be a befitting forerunner for me and so I wept as you saw me. And when he saw me in grief he talked to me secretly for the second time and said: ‘Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha, are you not pleased that you should be at the head of the believing women or the head of this Ummah?’  I laughed and it was that laughter which you saw.” [Sahih Muslim, Hadith 6467]

Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha is undoubtedly the Chief of the Ladies of Paradise and her two sons, Imam Hasan Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha and Imam Husain Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha, are the chiefs of the Youths of Paradise. But it should be borne in mind that Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha is the chief of the women of this Ummah and not of the whole world.  The Chief of the Women of the whole world is Sayyidah Maryam Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha, as it has been stated in the Holy Qur'an:

وإذ قالت الملائكة يا مريم إن الله اصطفاك وطهرك واصطفاك على نساء العالمين
“And when the Angels said: O Mariyam, surely Allah SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala has chosen thee and purified thee and chosen thee above the women of the world.” [Surah Aal-e-Imran: 42]

In another narration, Sayyidah Ayesha Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha reported that when she asked Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha the reasons of her crying and laughing when her father talked to her secretly, she said:

سارني النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم فأخبرني أنه يقبض في وجعه التي توفي فيه فبكيت ثم سارني فأخبرني أني أول أهل بيته أتبعه فضحكت
“He informed me secretly of his death and so I cried. He then informed me secretly that I would be the first amongst the members of his family to follow him, so I laughed.” [Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3427 ; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2450]

This Hadith shows the implicit faith that Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha had in the words of her father. She believed that her father was given the Knowledge of Unseen. She was quite sure that the events would take the same turn as her father had informed her. This Hadith also shows that Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha loved her father more dearly than her husband and children, and her meeting with him in the Hereafter was a source of great comfort and consolation for her.

Blessed be that symbol of honor; Pious Batool, our Prophet’s daughter
Blessed be the veils of graces; Which from sun and moon hid their faces
Blessed be our Prophet’s beloved daughter; Pious, pure and women’s leader

Hazrat Ayesha Siddiqa

Introduction of Hazrat Ayesha Siddiqa

Sayyidah Ayesha Siddiqah Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha was the third lady to enter the house of the Beloved Habeeb Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him as his wife, and she was the only virgin in the consorts of purity of the Holy Prophet’s Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him house. She was of a tender age when she was married to Allah’s Apostle Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him.

Historical records bear ample testimony to the fact that Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha was a precocious genius and was developing both in mind and body with rapidity peculiar to such rare personalities. This marriage is significant in the history of Islam in so many aspects.

Firstly, it cemented the ties between Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him and his devoted friend Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddique Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha who always stood by him in hour of trial and who sacrificed his all for the cause of Islam.

Secondly, by this marriage, a lady of eminent qualities came under the direct influence of the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him at a highly impressionable age, and this provided her ample opportunities to penetrate into the innermost recesses of the sacred heart of the Beloved Habeeb Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him. She shared his company and thus was able to develop her potentialities and refine her taste perfectly in accordance with the teachings of Islam under the direct supervision of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him.

This young age was in fact very opportune for marriage as it has been clearly shown in the researches of psychoanalysts that much of the emotional of a mature person and most of those seemingly unaccountable leanings, tastes and tendencies comprised in the term idiosyncrasies can be traced to the experience of his or her highly formative age of either later childhood or early adolescence.

Thirdly, all the wives of the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him with the exception of Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha were of advanced age and thus could neither share the feelings of the younger generation nor could they properly appreciate their point of view. The difference of age always stood as a barrier between them and the ladies of the younger ages. The only lady with whom young women could frankly enter into conversation and discuss problems without any reserve could be none but Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha. Thus, the marriage of the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him with Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha at an age when she was at the threshold of puberty was a great necessity, as it was through her that instructions could successfully be imparted to the young ladies who had newly entered the fold of Islam.

Moreover, this marriage struck at the root of a wrong notion that had firmly taken hold of the minds of the people that it was contrary to religious ethics to marry the daughter of a man whom one declared to be one’s brother. The Messenger of Allah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, with the help of his personal example, showed to the people that there is a great difference between a brother-in-faith and the brother in relation to blood. The marriage, which is forbidden in Islam, is with the daughter of the brother in blood and not with the daughter of the brother-in-faith.

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha lived on almost fifty years after the passing away of the Messenger of Allah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him. She passed away in the year 58 A.H. in the month of Ramadaan and was buried in the sacred graveyard Baqi al-Garqad of Madinatul Munawwara.

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha reported that the Apostle of Allah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him said:

“I saw you in a dream for three nights when an Angel brought you to me in a silk cloth and he said, ‘Here is your wife’, and when I removed the cloth from your face, it was yourself, so I said, ‘If this is from Allah SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala, let Him carry it out.’”

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha used to play with dolls in the presence of the Messenger of Allah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him and when her playmates came to her they left (the house) because they felt shy of the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him whereas Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him sent them to her. People sent their gifts when it was the turn of Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha seeking thereby the pleasure of Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him .

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha said:

“The wives of Allah’s Apostle Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him sent his daughter Faatima Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha to him. She sought permission to get in as he had been lying with me in my mantle. He gave her permission and she said: ‘Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him ! Verily, your wives have sent me to you in order to ask you to observe equity in case of the daughter of Abu Quhafah.’ She (Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha ) said: ‘I kept quiet’. Thereupon, Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him said to her (Faatima Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha ):

‘O daughter! Don’t you love whom I love?’ She said: ‘Yes, I do’. Thereupon, he said: ‘I love this one (Ayesha)’.

“Faatima Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha then stood up as she heard this from her father and went to the wives of Allah’s Apostle Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him and informed them of what she had said to him and what he had said to her. Thereupon, they said to her: ‘We think that you have been of no avail to us. You may again go to Allah’s Apostle and tell him that his wives seek equity in case of the daughter of Abu Quhafah’. Faatima Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha said: ‘By Allah I will never talk to him about this matter’.

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha (further) reported:

The wives of Allah’s Apostle Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him then sent Zaynab bint Jahsh Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha , the wife of the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him , and she was one who was somewhat equal in rank with me in the eyes of the Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him and I have never seen a woman more advanced in religious piety than Zaynab Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha , more Allah-conscious, more truthful, more alive to the ties of blood, more generous and having more sense of self-sacrifice in practical life and having more charitable disposition and thus more close to Allah SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala, the Exalted, than her. She however lost temper very soon but was soon calm. Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him permitted her to enter as she (Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha ) was along with Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him in her mantle, in the same very state when Faatima Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha had entered. She said: ‘Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him , your wives have sent me to you seeking equity in case of the daughter of Abu Quhafah’. She then came to me and showed harshness to me and I was seeing the eyes of Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him whether he would permit me. Zaynab Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha went on until I came to know that Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him would not disapprove if I retorted. Then I exchanged hot words until I made her quiet. Thereupon, the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him smiled and said: ‘She is the daughter of Abu Bakr Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha ’”.

This Hadith gives a clear glimpse of the home life of the Glorious Messenger of Allah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him. The wives of the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him were all eminent ladies having deep Allah-consciousness, but they, after all, belonged to the human race and thus, could not completely banish those minor human weaknesses, which are ingrained in the very nature of the fair sex. They were all deeply attached to the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him and every one of them had, therefore, an earnest desire that she should get the maximum love and affection from the Prophet of Allah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him. It was out of this spirit of envy, rather than jealousy, that they put forward this demand. It was a natural expression of their humanly feelings born of their love for the Beloved Habeeb Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him , and not an objection against the attitude and behavior of the “Mercy of the Worlds”. And they could not even conceive of it; and how could they, when all of them had been receiving the most beneficent treatment at his hand?

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha reported:

“When the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him set out on a journey, he used to cast lots amongst his wives. Once this lot came out in my favour and that of Hafsa Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha. They (Hafsa Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha and Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha ) both went along with him and when it was night Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him used to travel on camel along with Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha and talked with her. Hafsa Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha said to Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha : ‘Would you like to ride upon my camel tonight and allow me to ride upon your camel and you would see (what you generally do not see) and I would see (what I do not see) generally?’ She said: ‘Yes’. But, Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha rode upon the camel of Hafsa Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha and Hafsa Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha rode upon the camel of Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha and Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him came near the camel of Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha , (whereas) Hafsa Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha had been riding over that. He greeted her and then rode with her until they came down. She (Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha ) thus missed the company of the Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him and when they sat down, Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha felt jealous. She put her foot in the grass and said: ‘O ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala , let the scorpion sting me or a serpent bite me. And so far as Your Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him is concerned, I cannot say anything about him’”.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Maalik Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha has said:

“The Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him said that the excellence of Ayesha over women is like the excellence of Tharid over all other foods.”

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha is one of the four persons (the others being Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha , Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Omar Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha and Sayyiduna Anas bin Maalik Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha ) who transmitted more than two thousand sayings of the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him. The Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him referring to her extensive knowledge of Islam is reported to have said:

“Learn a portion of your religion from this Humayra (red coloured lady).”

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anha not only possessed great knowledge but also took an active part in education and social reform. As a teacher she had a clear and persuasive manner of speech and her power of oratory has been described in superlative terms. Men and women came from far and wide to benefit from her knowledge.

According to the Orientalist, D.S. Margoliouth, he wrote:

“Of the entire number of inmates, Lady Ayesha alone, by force of character and keenness of wit, won for herself a place in the political and religious history of Islam.” [Quoted by Fida Hussain Maalik in his book, ‘Wives of the Prophet’, Bombay, 1989, Page 124]

Purity of Syeda Ayesha & Prophets Knowledge

Dear Readers, We received a forwarded email few days back in which an accusation was made regarding the blessed knowledge of the Unseen of the Beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam and few Ignorant Idiots linked it to the Quranic verse which tells us of the accusation of immorality made on our beloved Mother Umm al-Momineen Sayyidatuna Ayesha Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha. According to them, the beloved Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam) was disturbed by it and didn't say anything before the revelation (wahi) was made (i.e. whether the accusation was true or not). If he had knowledge of the unseen, why did he remain silent for so many days?
    ANSWER TO THE OBJECTION:

The objection itself confirms that remaining silent is not proof of not knowing something (it does not necessarily confirm it). Allah SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala did not reveal ayahs of her innocence for some days, so did He not have a clue about it? The hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari clearly states,

“I know my wife to be only chaste.” [Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Maghazi, Baab Hadith al-Ifk, Hadith 4141]

This proves his knowledge but not revealing it before time. It is also not possible for Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam to have been suspicious of Sayyidah Aisha Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anha because Allah said to the Muslims as a rebuke,

“Why did Muslim males and females not think good in their hearts and immediately said, “This is clear falsehood?” – [Surah Nur, Verse 12]

So before the revealing of innocence, it was compulsory on Muslims to think good of her and haram upon them to be suspicious. – And the Prophet is definitely free (ma’sum) from haram. Thus, he was not suspicious of Sayyidah Aisha Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anha in the least. Yes, for him to say that it was a clear lie was not compulsory on him immediately because this was a domestic matter.

Now remains Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam being distressed and why he remained silent. Not knowing was not the cause of this. Consider an innocent person who is wrongfully accused of something. He knows that it’s a lie, but will still be distressed due to the fear of defamation. People spreading these rumours, was also the reason for this dilemma. If the Holy Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) did not wait for the revelation of the ayahs but immediately informed people of Sayyidah Aisha Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anha’s innocence, the hypocrites would have said, “See how he protects his family members.” And Muslims would not have come to know of the rules of wrongful accusation. Also, the method of researching cases would not have been known and Sayyidah Ayesha Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anha would not have received the reward of patience that she demonstrated during this time. In short, there were many wisdoms behind this delay in revealing her innocence.

It is also a rule of Islamic beliefs that the wife of a Prophet cannot be immoral. Allah states in the Holy Quran,

“Impure women belong to impure men and immoral men to immoral women.” – [Surah Nur, Verse 26]

The impurity spoken of here refers to fornication (zina). In other words, the consort of a Prophet can never be a fornicator. Yes, she can become a disbelievers (kafirah) because, although disbelief (kufr) is a major offense, it is not an immoral act. People think of fornication to morally incorrect, not kufr. This is why the wives of the Prophets do not experience nocturnal dreaming (ihtilam). A hadith states that Umme Salma was surprised to know that women also experience ihtilam – Mishkat, Kitab al-Ghusl.

So does the Holy Prophet not know this rule of Beliefs (that a wife of a Prophet cannot be immoral)? Is he unaware that Sayyidah Aisha Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anha is the wife of the Leader of the Prophets and that this type of behaviour cannot be displayed by her? No, it was the Will of Allah to Himself to testify to the innocence of Sayyidah Aisha Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anha through the ayahs revealed so that all Muslims of the entire world can proclaim her chastity and greatness, even in Salah. Thus, if Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam personally revealed her innocence, all of these excellences would not have been obtained. In short, he had knowledge but did not reveal it.

The grace of this matter is that when Zulaikha laid an accusation against Hadrat Yusuf Alaihis Salam, Allah Himself did not directly reveal his innocence but revealed it through an infant. Similarly, when Sayyidah Maryam was wrongfully accused, He revealed her innocence through the infant Ruhullah. However, when the beloved of His Beloved was accused, Allah did not proclaim her innocence through any angel or infant but Himself gave witness and recorded it in the Holy Quran! This testimony came to be part of Iman and for the creation to understand the proximity of the Holy Prophet to Allah through it.

At this point, there are three terms that should be understood,
    1. Jahl (ignorance) – To absolutely not know something
    2. Nisyan (forgetfulness) – to previously have known something which did not stay in memory.
    3. Zuhul (abstractedness) – To have something in memory but not pay attention to it.

Therefore, there are three types of people that can be deduced from the above. The first do not learn the Quran, the second memorize it but forget it and the third are complete huffaz of it, though if you ask them about any ayah, they will not answer because their concentration is not directed towards it. They are termed Jahil, Nasi and Zahil of the Holy Quran respectively.

At some instances, the Prophets can experience forgetfulness about particular things though they do not remain as such. The Holy Quran speaks about Sayyidunah Adam,

“He forgot and did not find any intent on his part.” – [Surah Taha, Verse 115]

The vision of Hadrat Adam Alaihis Salam was fixed on the Lawh-e-Mahfuz and all of these things before him. However, it was the Divine Will that he experiences forgetfulness (nisyan).

In search for an intercessor on the Day of Qiyamat, all Muslims, including the Muhadithin, Mufassirin and Fuqaha will approach the Prophets and request them to intercede (Shafa’at). Neither will they do so not will they tell the people to go to Shafi’al Muznabin Muhammad Mustafa directly. They will say, “Go to Nuh,” “Go to Ibrahim”, etc. Maybe they can intercede for you people,” even though all of them have the belief in this world that only Muhammad-ur-Rasulullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam is the intercessor on the Day of Qiyamat. This is an example of abstractedness (zuhul i.e. not paying attention to something). Thus, if the Prophet is questioned about something and immediately does not answer, zuhul is a possible reason for this,

“Even though you were unconcerned about the incident of Yusuf before this” – [Surah Yousuf, Verse 3]

“Ghafil” was the word used, “Jahil”. A ghafil is someone who has knowledge of an incident but does not pay any attention towards it.

Haji Imdadullah Makki Alaihir raHma (whom the Opponents in Indo-Pak believe to be their Spiritual Guide and Leader) says: “People say that the Prophets Alaihim as-Salam and Awliya Alaihim ar-Rahma do not possess the Knowledge of the Unseen. I say that the men of truth perceive the Unseen whenever they cast their eyes around them. In fact, this perception is the knowledge of truth. Those who say that the Holy Prophet Hadrat Muhammad Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him did not know about Hudaibiyah and Hadrat Ayesha Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha are misguided. Attention is the pre-requisite for any knowledge.” [Shamaim-e-Imdadiyah, Page 110 – Anwaar-e-Ghaibiyah, Page 125]

Gulistan states that Hadrat Ya’qub Alaihis Salam was asked, “You have smelt the fragrance of Yusuf’s kurta from Egypt but did not know that he was in the well of Kinan?” He replied, “Our condition is like the fury of lightning, sometimes it is visible and sometimes it is not.”

It is proven from Quranic verses that Hadrat Ya’qub Alaihis Salam has knowledge that the Moon of Kinan, Hadrat Yusuf Alaihis Salam, was shining in Egypt. He said,

“I know from Allah those things which you do not know.” – [Surah Yusuf, Verse 86]

Commentating on verse 59, of Surah Aa’raf – Allamah Ismail Haqqi writes that Allah loves the crying of His beloveds. Hadrat Nuh cried so hard that his name became Nuh (the person who extensively weeps). The separation from Hadrat Yusuf Alaihis Salam was the visible cause of Hadrat Ya’qub Alaihis Salam’s crying, but in fact, this crying was the means of the extensive grandeur to be elevated. Hence, Hadrat Ya’qub Alaihis Salam’s crying was not because of being unaware of Hadrat Yusuf Alaihis Salam – rather,

“Figuration is the arcade leading to reality.” – [Tafsir Ruhul Bayan, Vol 6, Page 85]

Hadrat Yusuf Alaihis Salam kept Benyamin back in Egypt through and artifice (hila). His brothers returned to swear that Benyamin had become a royal prisoner and even presented the testimony of the travellers in caravans. However, it was said,

“Your lower-self (nafs) has taught you hila.” – [Surah Yusuf, Verse 83]

In other words, Hadrat Ya’qub Alaihis Salam was trying to say, “Hadrat Yusuf Alaihis Salam was separated from me by my children and Benyamin has also been separated from me by child (Hadrat Yusuf Alaihis Salam though a hila).” This proves that he had true knowledge of the incident. To the uniformed, there were two sons of Hadrat Ya’qub Alaihis Salam, remaining in Egypt (Benyamin and Yahuda), but Hadrat Ya’qub Alaihis Salam said,

“Soon Allah will make the three meet me.” – [Surah Yusuf, Verse 83]

Who was the third person? Of course it was Hadrat Yusuf Alaihis Salam.

When Zulaikha locked Hadrat Yusuf Alaihis Salam in the house to express bad thoughts., Hadrat Ya’qub Alaihis Salam came inside and, pressing his finger beneath his teeth, gestured to the following, “O my son, this is not your action. You are the son of a prophet.” The Holy Quran states about it,

“He too would have made the intent of Zulaikha if he did not see the proof of his Lord.” –[Surah Yusuf, Verse 24]

It should be kept in mind that the brothers of Hadrat Yusuf Alaihis Salam informed Hadrat Ya’qub Alaihis Salam that wolves had eaten his son. However, through the shirt of Hadrat Yusuf Alaihis Salam and the message of the wolves, Hadrat Ya’qub Alaihis Salam knew that they were false. The wolves submitted to him, “The fleshes of the Prophets are haram for us.” – Tafsir Khazin and Ruhul Bayan, Surah Yusuf

So why did he not go into the wilderness to find his son? This is also proof that he had information of something but kept it a secret. He knew that he would eventually meet his son in Egypt.

So, is it possible that Hadrat Ya’qub Alaihis Salam is aware of the actions of his sons yet Sayyiduna Rasulullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam has no clue of the condition of Sayyidah Aisha Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anha? Verily, Allah grants him insight but blesses him with measures to control his knowledge. In other words, he does not disclose any secret without Allah’s wish.

“Allah knows best where to place His message (Prophethood)” – [Surah Anam, Verse 124]
